Who am I?

Christine Chan is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) and the Suzuki Music Association of California – Bay Area Piano Branch (SMAC-BAPB). She had been a Suzuki parent from 1987-2012 and a Suzuki teacher since 1988 under the mentorship of Caroline Fraser. Christine had studied under Constance Starr and Mary Craig Powell as well as attended workshops by Peggy Swingle, Mark Steiner, Betty Wu, Roy Bogas, and more. She attends Suzuki Institutes to observe master classes of all levels taught by Doris Kopplemann, Dorris Harrel, and Caroline Fraser.
With 30 years of teaching experience as of 2018, Christine has built up a repertoire of teaching tools to make lessons interesting, fun, and engaging. She respects the individuality of each student and teaches utilizing the philosophies of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in his book Nurtured by Love. In addition to creatively imparting skills to play the piano, she focuses on developing character in students and building musicality. She also emphasizes the importance of music reading in promoting independence for students' growth as a musician.
Currently, she teaches in University Place (WA) as well as the greater Tacoma area and aspires to utilize technology for virtual piano lessons, reaching more families with the Suzuki philosophy. She has built successful studios in warm and loving home environments, and had been on faculty at Creative Arts for Kids in Massachusetts. She provides care and encouragement to student and parent alike in order to foster the cooperative team effort of learning in the Suzuki triangle.
